The red states are turning the social and economic clock back decades, or more, at a velocity that people in blue states cannot really fathom.

Missouri's bluenoses just told women they can't show their shoulders in the state's House of Representatives.

These places are racing to reinstall official racism, misogyny, and more.

Missouri lawmakers adopt stricter dress code for women in state House

Lawmakers in the Missouri House of Representatives this week adopted a stricter dress code for women as part of a new rules package, and now requires them to cover their shoulders by wearing a jacket like a blazer, cardigan or knit blazer.

@dangillmor May I suggest the following reaction from “Stick It”?

@dangillmor Yeah, I've told liberal friends for years that with a very few exceptions, what we think has been progress, is actually just retarding the Right's increasing control over nearly everything. Meanwhile, elections are losing value as minority rule proves more powerful than majority rule. We're at a political crossroads not unlike our social media crisis. We can choose to keep on doing what's caused all the problems, or break the mold and try to start something new.
@dangillmor I don't have any proof for this, but I think you'd be surprised at how many people in blue states would view this particular example as unremarkable and perfectly acceptable. This, I think, is an example of a genuine liberal bubble disconnected from the average person.
@dangillmor Some people on the left have taken these ideas to their logical extreme. A very intelligent friend told me that allowing men but not women to show their breasts at the beach is unconstitutional. I understand the logic of his position. And one day that may become society's position. What is once shocking can become the norm later. But it certainly wouldn't shock most Americans - blue state or not - that women aren't allowed to show their breasts in public.

I think you're onto something here. I grew up in a very liberal community and about 15 years ago now I moved to the deep south for a job. Particularly over the last 6 years I'll tell friends and family out west about political goings ons here and the reaction is usually a variation "Oh well. Move?" or "Florida man does Florida things." Asking someone from Washington or California to care about Missouri or Florida is a stretch for most people, apparently.

@BE Oh, I meant because they wouldn't actually object to dress code for women in the state house, not because they wouldn't care about what's going on elsewhere. But you make a very interesting point.
@dangillmor America needs a government more powerful than Democracy! HUMANITY must be FRONT and CENTER !
@dangillmor The Republicans more and more are like the Taliban.
@belladavis @dangillmor Oh, I think American reactionary conservatism goes way back before the Taliban was a gleam in Reagan's eye.
@dangillmor what the everlasting f..k. people. My money is on that these are the same crackers that were shouting about "Sharia Law" when Obama was President.
@dangillmor there needs to be a protest for the right to bare arms. I hope thousands of women show up at the Capitol building wearing tank tops. Why? Why does this kind of thing need to be regulated? Don't professionals dress like professionals?
@dangillmor You do know there is dress code in congress right? Why is one dress code fine but not the other?
@dangillmor
The right will soon be indistinguishable from the Taliban.

@dangillmor

Liar liar leftist pants on fire

@dangillmor …Missouri house changes State moniker from “show me” to “ I see nothing”.
@dangillmor I believe if there are going to be dress codes they should be equivalent. If men are expected to wear a jacket and tie, why is it unacceptable to expect women to wear something similar? The reason the change was implemented was to make the dress code similar to the one that applies to men. I would also understand eliminating the dress code completely. We do a horrible job of picking our battles on the left.
@dangillmor I’d be furious to discover my tax dollars were used to try to control the behavior of women like this. There’s no way I’d vote for any of these people.
@dangillmor it's got a very Man In The High Castle vibe to it. Pretty soon the East Coast will be Nazis, the middle will be the Neutral Zone etc etc.
