Blues: The world is fucked
Punk: The world is fucked and I'm pissed
Emo: The world is fucked and I'm sad
Grunge: The world is fucked and I'm medicated
Ska: The world is fucked and I have a trumpet
@LadyDragonfly I think the blues is more like "The world is fucked and I'm chill."
@donnadechen the blues literally began as formerly enslaved people singing about racial discrimination and disparity. Wasn't much "chill" about it, afaik.
@LadyDragonfly @donnadechen โ€œthe world is fucked AND my woman/man left me.โ€ Not much chill at allโ€ฆ
@btanderson @LadyDragonfly @donnadechen Isnโ€™t that country? ๐Ÿ˜œ

@metadaddy @btanderson @LadyDragonfly @donnadechen

Youโ€™re shy a pickup truck and a โ€œ4th of julyโ€ reference for that.

@LadyDragonfly @donnadechen jazz and blues came from slave songs passed down, and altered by sharecroppers and early gospel, but where jazz got experimental, blues stuck to the plight of common man...sorta.
But no, blues ain't chill but what that means depends on where the blues come from. Muddy Waters/delta blues in is old school. BB/Chicago blues got some party going on. John Lee Hooker everybody gets and why he had a 50+year run. Shit he did with Santana is lit AF
@olavf @donnadechen good job! Looks like your really starting to understand the subject!
@donnadechen @LadyDragonfly More like "Well, I woke up this mornin', and I saw the world is fucked."
@LadyDragonfly Grateful for all the thoughtful responses on this thread, even (or maybe especially) the snarky ones. Blues has always fascinated me because despite the super-depressing themes of the lyrics, I always feel something uplifting, liberating in the music itself. Blues is one of the most honest genres of music out there, IMHO.
