@AlexanderVI @UncleDuke1969 Fun factoid: "dogies" refers to orphaned or abandoned calves (often the second-born of twins, which cows sometimes mistakenly believe aren't theirs). In some places, they're called "leppies" (lepers).

So the old song is pitying the young, homeless, "motherless" cowboy riding the range. Adds a real pathos!
