If one person punches another person in the face and says it's OK because punching is their shared culture, ask the person who's been punched if they agree.

The Taliban thugocracy has responded to the Afghanistan chapter of our new World Report by saying universal human rights are not wanted in Afghanistan.

I’d be willing to bet at least half the population thinks otherwise – the half called women and girls, whom the Taliban treat as sub-human animals.

Thugocracy vs Humanity: Daily Brief

The Taliban thugocracy has responded to Human Rights Watch’s new World Report by saying universal human rights are not wanted in Afghanistan. @astroehlein bets at least half the country disagrees…

Human Rights Watch
@andrewstroehlein they're basically an oversized version of an abusive relationship. You can try to separate them and make their lives better but they will always end up back together. That's how that culture is and it isn't exclusive to Afghanistan. You'll see the same in many other countries in that region. Sadly forcing moral change doesn't work and change can only happen from the inside at their own will.
@AlkaVirus @andrewstroehlein Alka this is one of the best analogies I’ve seen of male dominant societies. I somewhat disagree with it being only inside change, outside “influence” can be handy - e.g. Ukraine 🇺🇦 Please note the 20 yr malarkey in Afghanistan by 🇺🇸 was/is the poster child of “don’t do it this way.”
@andrewstroehlein we tend to think when religion results into oppression of a certain section of the population, that section must be opposing it. But, it's hardly so. In fact, women tend to be more religious than men, and I can bet more women would be supporting this "imposition of the true moral values", than fighting against it. People are complex.
@andrewstroehlein I would like this toot to be offered to every person posing as a revolutionary, who makes much of wanting to "punch in the face" anyone whose politics offends them.

@andrewstroehlein

You may underestimate the support for extreme patriarchy from Afghan women. Remember that more than half of white women vote for today's GOP.

I haven't seen a recent anthropology survey (too hot a topic probably) but older women support for genital mutilation is a critical in many cultures.

@andrewstroehlein

Well said. All Iranian and Afghani women are honourary Ukrainians, should any border guard or lawyer ask.

Afghani women are automatically refugees, Iranian are automatically welcome.

@andrewstroehlein and the boys? Nobody speaks of the boys that end up as cannon fodder or lesser. The taliban at least see the value of women and girls in their womb, but boys hold no value at all.

@andrewstroehlein And already there are trollbots in replies with their usual "but the US..." whataboutism and "women actually love to be religiously oppressed" sexist garbage.

So how is Mastodon better than Twitter if it's the same trollbot swamp here?

@andrewstroehlein

I had a quiet brainstorming moment once thinking about Afghanistan and one of the solutions involved Afghan women holding all the *guns* for a generation or two...
