Merrick Garland's priorities:

1. Joe Biden's classified documents
2. Optics
3. Not upsetting insurrectionists
4. How things look
5. Not being 'political'
6. Discretion
7. Not being too hasty
8. Likability
9. The appearance of impartiality
10. Other things
11. Who knows

543. Ensuring democracy survives the next #GOP attack

@brewster It's so dumb to worry about the perception of politics or fairness from the right.

There is literally *nothing* a Dem could do that meets that standard--they don't care.

There is literally *no part of that standard* the right would uphold on their own watch. They. Don't. Care.

@whyJoe exactly! The right will complain about everything, regardless.
@whyJoe @brewster Exactemundo. They jettisoned reason in June 2015. They can only be defeated, not reasoned with. Like the Confederacy.
@whyJoe @brewster
How about not doing it for them but for us. I don't hold myself to a higher standard for others. I do it for me. Because I believe it is right and everyone should. Fuck them.
@whyJoe @statmonkey I’m not sure we live in that world anymore, sadly.

@brewster @whyJoe Respectfully disagree.

We will always live in that world.

Don't confuse unwillingness to face reality and consequences with there being no reality or consequences.

Pretending does not make it so.

@statmonkey @brewster The only possible enforcers of consequences are the ones afraid to, because of worries of the appearance of politics, to mollify the un-mollifiable. That's the problem, friend.
@whyJoe @brewster I disagree. If they are guilty of anything it's being afraid of becoming what they are fighting. Black lamb, grey falcon as Rebecca West called it, is the quintessential battle for humanity and it will never end. We have to keep trying. It's essential.

@statmonkey @brewster Sure. You could give them the benefit of the doubt and say their motivation is existential instead.

Either way, it does not work. Look around at the burning 🔥.

@statmonkey @brewster The point is, it leads to Dems wringing their hands and bending over backwards. Second guessing themselves. Trying to negotiate in good faith with back-stabbers and liars.
@whyJoe @brewster What's the alternative? If you don't deal with them, confront them, stand up to them they run unabated. If you don't wring your hands and ring the alarm bells it only emboldens them. Sorry I'm going to call them out, I'm going to wring my hands, I'm going to shout from the damned roof until I'm hoarse. If the last 20 years have taught me anything it's that I need to do more of this not less.
@statmonkey @brewster I think you've misunderstood. They wring their hands about sounding overly political, which is why the DON'T call them out or stand up. They need to worry less about being labeled shrill or "political," and stand up more.
@whyJoe @statmonkey and they need to stop acting like politicians from the 1950s. They need to be *much* bolder about calling the GOP out as corrupt thieves. They need to *get their hands dirty* and go for the throat. There’s many ways to do that that aren’t ethically dubious but these days, I don’t even care about that. This is French resistance time - the ends justify the means.
@brewster @statmonkey this is 100% what I mean. Fully agree.
@whyJoe @brewster been saying this all along.
I say it right to the 3 fascist friends on my FB feed who are literally impervious to truth.
@whyJoe @brewster Different definitions of fairness. Fairness for Dems is equal or equitable treatment. Fairness for Republicans is treating people according to their rank in the social heirarchy.

@dogcanyon @brewster Fairness according to Republicans is getting literally anything they want, and even then, only when it is them getting it by doing it over someone's will.

See: McConnell pledging to vote against anything the left supports, even if they believe it's the right thing. He said it openly.

@whyJoe @brewster neither does America as we continue to sit on our comfort zones
