It certainly seems like a major shift for Dungeons and Dragons, if Wizards of the Coast closes the license and moves to a more proprietary model. It could spell the end of the game as we know it, as it would mean that only the official products would be allowed. However, there are already independent open gaming systems in existence, such as the Open Gaming License (OGL). This would allow anyone to create their own products, and even use content from the official books, as long as they comply with the OGL. It could be a great way to keep the spirit of Dungeons and Dragons alive, while still allowing creators to get the recognition they deserve.
