How is it that squirrels are so bad at crossing roads? Shouldn't the bad-at-crossing-roads-squirrels have been culled from the gene pool by now?

I commute by bike. A squirrel literally needs to not be in one exact 3-inch span of the road.

And yet I think I got part of a tail of one this morning. Another squirrel came within a foot of my bike tire.
