I have to start working on my #cosplay photo backlog for #AnimeLA18. This picture is from Saturday afternoon featuring 3 characters from #AkibaMaidWar in their Oinky Doink Café maid outfits and prop pistols. From left to right the characters are Nagomi, Zoya, and Ranko. Zoya and Ranko have visible in-character name badges, as well as light sticks as used for idol concerts
Next Friday photo for #AnimeLA18 is Himari from #MawaruPenguinDrum in her “Princess of the Crystal” form (specifically the most-dressed version of the form with the long, flowing gown). She’s holding out an apple - I believe that’s supposed to be part of the constellation of Kenji Miyazawa references in Penguindrum, but I haven’t watched the series since right around when it came out about a decade ago
@pcas Even the openings have apples in them.
@pkemner yes, the apple is ultimately significant to the relationship between the siblings. I think even the choice of an apple as a symbol may come out of Miyazawa’s “Night on the Galactic Railroad”
@pcas I agree. It would be interesting to trace how many shows and movies seem to have been influenced by either the 1934 book or the 1985 anime of Night on the Galactic Railroad.
@pkemner I get the feeling the book is part of standard reading curriculum for children in Japanese elementary schools, so its influence probably pops up all over the place, albeit in ways that an American audience isn’t likely to pick up on
