Have you considered that grammar is a socially-accepted set of guidelines to maximize clarity and not a bunch of rules we have to follow to the letter in order for what we say to be valid?
Like any "rules", it's good to understand what they are and why they're useful for clear writing and communication, because then you can focus on the outcome -- communicating clearly -- instead of following a set of rules as they were the day you learned them at age 12.
