@gregolear I've meant to relay this ever since seeing Tinker, Tailor, Mobster...You Mr Olear, have balls to write that!
The year was 94, Allenwood White deer pa, med high security where all the old mob guys & ppl just under going max security go, all hard core street savy cons. I was 28, engineering student at 17, 70s kid, the 'yea whatever' generation that accepted most ppl were full of shit. Risk taker & Rule breaker I eventually emptied a couple bank vaults & got 9yrs as 1st offence.

@gregolear I was greener than the #EmeraldMuskRat & knew I just had to survive. All new guys slept in the pit, center of the unit while older guys decided who to take in as a 'cellie'. Sammy D eventually approached me, looking like Brando in the last Godfather, old & hunched over a cane, black marble eyes. He was actually interrogating me, I didn't realize it, after seeing my paperwork for solo bank jobs & no signs of being a 'Rat', I had a new home a 8x10 cell(18mo),life would never b the same

@gregolear I became the gopher, cook, gin player & story listener for Sammy D, but while doing so I learned to survive. Who was ok, who to avoid, how to act & react,, he was so good I eventually went from total green to one of the 'inmates that run the asylum' amongst increadibly dangerous ppl.
His claim to fame was 'I'm da biggest guy nobody knows about'. The son of an enforcer, he illuded jail while 'hustling $$' until his son got involved w 'fast $' drugs. It was all about Respect, Juice & $$

@gregolear gottis brother was there & Sammy eclipsed him,, most all bowed to him & he made all laugh,, but it wasn't his words at all, 'Davit, watch my eyes' & facial expressions. I learned the phenomenon of 'sit downs' or the only time their words were actually serious. Everything was a spin, an angle,, I soon realized this guy w/out a high school diploma was the most cleaver, smart human I've ever met.
I hike the stolen food from the thrives to the room & cook it up. Gin rummy was story time

@gregolear at first it was fascinating, hustling $$ wherever possible, the 'broads', friendly church stories, he had his lines thou, he didn't like Scarfo because of character/violence but didn't elaborate etc.
The 2 stories that lived on were- 1 Why he didn't acknowledge Buffalo as cosa nostra & 2 the rich kid developer that his 'fader' passed on to them. He'd recite all stories in a monotone voice, hunched over with big black marbles for eyes, except for the story of donald in the helicopter

@gregolear heard it a few times over the yr&1/2 wld bring it up at the end to piss him off. In his chair hunched over the makeshift gin table on overturned trash can, must have neen in a bad mood to bring it up & must have happened shortly b4 89 when he went down,, started w th Philly guys, his connect, 'we were in the helicopter over the worksite when he started' (donald breaks the two(2) golden rules of mob ettiqute- never short $$ & never Disrespect, in confined quarters w/old Shool guy)

@gregolear I eventually determined that donald went from the complete Cowardly court jester he had been since daddy handed him over under Cohns supervision(70ish?) to a loudmouth ballsy fool telling off Sammy D as he nears retirement. The Vig was too high, the balance owed was too high, insults.. "Davit, I wanted to grab him by the throat & choke the near life outa him, then throw him out & watch his body splatter on the concrete below" as the old man transforms into a ball of fury, shaking...

@gregolear 2 things were completely evident,, old Sammy had experience both choking ppl & seeing them splatter'. The only time he ever gave me the danger feeling, that he actually developed... so what next I'd say,, 'dey had to constrain me & promised I was the one to finish him' but they had to have a sit down 1st, cause of da fadder ' 5 family sit down' he'd say w a hint of disgust. 'Da jew lawyer saved him' they had respect for Cohn & th father was never a problem. Cohn paid the tab 'w/a Vig'

@gregolear and donald was to not do business anymore,, as for the mob guys, they wernt supposed to even say his name aloud. Sammy was robbed of the hit & ranted about it until he died in 97 in a med unit, no doubt. His claim to fame, the "biggest guy nobody knows about" which very well could have been true, he was a master ppl person, was actually "the old school gangster who lost the contract on a future US President.".

It was 8 yrs of hell but that story of nearly 30 yrs ago is unforgettable
