When you have 6 year olds shooting people, the only answer is gun control. A 6 year old is not a rational actor. You don't stop a 6 year old from shooting someone through increased punishment or a "good guy with a gun." You only stop it by preventing the gun from ever reaching that child's hands. https://www.cnn.com/2023/01/06/us/newport-news-virginia-shooting/index.html
@gregpak I was chilled by the cops calling a 6-year-old a "young man." Watch them try to charge him as an adult.
@brianvastag @gregpak Came to mention the same quote. Ye gods.
@brianvastag @gregpak apparently there’s a Virginia law preventing that.
@gregpak A man picked up a gavel yesterday and, for all intents and purposes, ended the possibility of reform for another 2 years. Think of how many will die in that time span?
@gregpak and if you won’t, you should have neither gun nor child.

@gregpak This happened an hour from us. It's so absolutely horrifying and yet there are people calling for us to arm teachers.

My husband (a teacher) and I have discussed what might have happened had the teacher been armed... nothing good.

Gun control is the ONLY rational choice here.

Matt's already said the moment they arm teachers is the moment he leaves the profession. No way. No how.

@RachelSL @gregpak
That's an excellent point. Way to make children scared of teachers too.

@gregpak
I do agree that gun control is needed. People need to start being reasonable and have an adult conversation concerning gun control.

Of note is that parents or whomever 6 yr old got gun from is not being responsible in gun storage.

@gregpak
I've said this elsewhere, but most of us here in Europe cannot comprehend the devotion of many Americans for the 2A. A "right" declared 250 years ago now trumps everyone's freedoms and rights to a peaceful life. It just makes no sense.
@ClaireCopperman @gregpak Most of us want gun control. But this bullshit is part of our Constitution and too many of our politicians are funded by the gun industry and law enforcement to revise it.
@shawrd773 @gregpak
Literally a case of "follow the money," I guess. So deeply depressing.

@gregpak You may get a fraction of a hundredth of a % more support if you refer to “sensible gun regulation” rather than “gun control”.

I grew up in red states, and the phrase “gun control” slams minds shut instantly.

@gregpak the mythical “good guy with a gun” would have had to shoot a 6-year-old. Hard to imagine that happening.

@gregpak What I can't understand is what this child has seen and heard in his 6 years on this earth to make it seem normal to touch, take with him and most of all fire a gun deliberately

It's accessibility, but also seemingly not being brought up to have respect for something so dangerous, to feel it's gravity (figurally speaking).

I teach 4-6 year olds and I know how emotional and angry they can get in the moment, but taking a weapon to school, that just baffles me.

@gregpak What new world of hurt is going to be unleashed if and when a "good guy with a gun" shoots an armed 6 year old?
