Imagine:

Reply | Boost | Fave | Dismiss

We *could* prompt people to de-escalate

But we don't

Like, if a user's options are:

Like/boost/bookmark/reply/report/block

And nothing else

And there's no way to get someone's unwelcome take out of your sight

Given that we have a culture of "you lose the argument if you block me"

We're prompting people to start a fight by not giving them any "de-escalate" buttons to push

🤷‍♂️

@researchfairy Wait, is there not at least a "Mute conversation" like even Twitter has (or had?)? i see that here on my Pleroma instance, and over on my Firefish one too, I've been assuming Mastodon had it too but I guess in retrospect I dunno why I was assuming Mastodon had a good natural human-centric feature that would somewhat reduce engagement.

@keithzg You can "mute conversation" on Masto

I'm imagining doing it to posts that you see on your home timeline though, especially given that there's certain ones that just keep getting boosted back up

@researchfairy Yeah I'm indeed talking about on my default timeline
@keithzg  Better things are possible????
@keithzg the Mastodon design decision is to only allow you to mute a thread from a notification you received, IIRC
@researchfairy would the mute function kind of work?
I remember muting a bunch of conversation over on twitter for peace of mind.
