had to restart webkit-gtk with the right number of jobs so the build wouldn't OOM, but voila, i have installed gentoo from stage3. honestly quite a bit easier than i remember...and compiling is about 30x faster than when i ran this as a teen
there were some rough edges unrelated to compiling too, like getting wireplumber set up required some USE flags changes. and the kernel is quite behind compared to on arch. overall though this runs great. also funny enough, bluetooth works better than it ever did on arch, no idea why
managing USE flags seems like more trouble than it’s worth on a high end desktop system, for example, I just had to disable GPM (console mouse support) for ncurses in order to merge the Steam meta package, and it’s unclear why that was required, there are many strange dependency loops that can only be resolved by flipping seemingly unrelated switches like this. Seems like a Portage byproduct tbh, I doubt I’d run into this on LFS
I think I might build LFS next, since I’m doing the teenage-meadow nostalgia tour. I read through the LFS book very closely, but don’t think I ever actually built it — I’ll probably try to follow along in qemu this time around
