Can someone give me the TLDR on the US Speaker of the House situation and why it matters? Do the Republicans actually control the House now or is this just another case of the Democrats failing to keep their reps in line?
The Republicans hold a narrow majority of the house. There weren't enough mainstream Republicans to get the required majority vote to elect a Speaker of the House until a large number of ballots and a bunch of behind the scenes wheeling and dealing was accomplished.
It matters because until there is a Speaker, no one (Democrat or Republcan) could be sworn in, meaning that the House couldn't do anything other than hold ballots for a new speaker.
