This drama is going to end and many people are going to throw up their hands and say “that’s politics” but with no greater understanding of how deeply dysfunctional it is to not be able to count your votes for your own caucus
Kevin McCarthy can’t pass legislation. He can’t do anything about all of those “issues” raised by his nominators in all of those shitty speeches we had to sit through. Every piece of legislation is a battlefield, and he’s always outgunned, outnumbered, and separated from supplies
McCarthy et al will sell this as a “comeback” but it’s nothing less than structural collapse. He can’t deliver votes — period. He’s not in control. He’s a “leader” whose followers are in a state of perpetual mutiny. He has nothing to offer Biden, nothing to give Schumer.
If there’s a crisis where everyone needs to be on the same page, McCarthy will be the first to be cut loose. He can’t guarantee that his faction will support anything that needs to be done.
And what Republicans have denied and convinced all of us to believe is that government doesn’t matter. We’re all captains of our own ships. But in reality, we’re all on one big cruiser together. And McCarthy is repping people who are blowing up the engine room. We’re stalling.
