‘Moving ice can sound like it’s alive’: the musicians delving into Antarctica

This year’s Sydney festival includes the opera Antarctica and a performance made from the sounds of grinding glaciers. But why are we so fascinated by the great white continent?

@magdelenehall having worked in Antarctica I can attest to this. Then again I also lived in central Alaska for fourteen years so heard a lot of ice noises there as well.

@carowe

It must have been fascinating (and freezing, goes wirhout saying). Chapeau!

@magdelenehall I loved the cold. Bone dry and dead calm and so fresh and invigorating. Nose hairs freeze, snow squeaking under your mukluks, frosty breath, cozy warm log cabin. Glorious aurora borealis.
@magdelenehall oh you were talking about Antarctic work. My answer was about Alaska winter. Antarctic work was in the austral summer so yes cold but warmer than Fairbanks at the same time (November thru February). The 24 hour daylight is a hard adjustment if you haven’t already been through a few Alaska summers (cold should go with dark) but in the end is convenient because the work day is so much longer.
