Sooo.. what happens if the GOP can't get a #Speakerofthehouse elected? Do they just keep repeating the vote until the next Congress election? Can the legislation function at all? #confusednordic
@uwwilo It will leave the option for the Democrats to negotiate with Republicans. At this point, they have stated that they won't negotiate for McCarthy at this point, but potentially a more moderate Republican speaker, but this can change. The Dems have a lot of power here.
@BaldBrad81 well, negotiating with Dems sounds a lot better to me than compromising with their extreme right... But really strange they don't have a deadline in law for calling a new election or just assigning someone based on seniority.

@uwwilo Well, first off, you're right that making a deal with Dems would be better than making a deal with the devil, but these are the same members of the GOP who voted to overturn a free and fair election. The last thing they want to do is give Dems any inch of power.

For the longest time, there was really never an issue but now it is understandable with the huge shift in people to the far right. It is a good thing as it shows how the democratic system is working. There will be a resolution..

@BaldBrad81 Honestly from a Nordic point of view, US democratic system *isn't* working. It's scraping by, barely, but the fault lines are so gigantic that the whole thing will crash down sooner or later.

Some repairs are sorely needed.

@uwwilo I agree 100%, part of that is the two party system. Additionally, getting money out of politics, stopping the Gerrymandering of congressional districts, and term limits on Congress. Getting legislation on these items passed by the individuals who benefit them is proving impossible.
