@ronak I’m surprised so many people think fantasy, when there is amazing science being utilised throughout the whole series. E.g., Pokémon centers, pokéball teleportation, Pokémon teleportation to the boxes. I think technology plays a huge central part to the plot in both the anime and the video-games.

I can see why people would say fantasy though. Because a lot of it is fantastical, especially some of the legendary Pokémon abilities. I guess science fantasy is a good meet in the middle.

But I will stick with science fiction as I feel so much of the series is rooted in the science fiction setting. Especially in the early 90s with the Pokédex, the video-phones, and again the science of healing Pokémon instantly with technology.

This is a great question though. I will be asking my friends and seeing what they think too. Great conversation starter!

@ronak Science fiction and fantasy often have an amount of overlap, and Pokemon has elements of both magic and science. The series is set in the modern day, but often uses folkloric elements (the mythical hero Pokemon of Sw/Sh, the legendary king of B/W, Arceus as creator deity, etc).

So I'm going with D, all of the above.

@ronak Honestly I don’t think it comes under just one genre, but a mix of aspects of different ones. There’s time travel, robots, genetic engineering, gods, mythical creatures and magical beings in the same setting. TV Tropes calls it a ‘fantasy kitchen sink’ and I part agree with them:

Fantasy Kitchen Sink - TV Tropes

What happens when All Myths Are True is turned Up to Eleven? You get a Fantasy Kitchen Sink! Everything is true, even if it comes from vastly different origins. So not only are there really dragons, there are fairies, ghosts, vampires, werewolves …

@CM30 “Fantasy kitchen sink”. Interesting name. :)
@ronak in my mind it’s just fantasy but if I think about it for just a little bit it’s science fantasy lol
