Another Black man falsely accused of a crime and arrested because of a bad facial recognition search. Fourth or so we know about; probably many more we don't. Arrested while driving to a family Thanksgiving and kept in jail for 7 days, even though he'd never been in the same state as the crime scene

JPSO used facial recognition technology to arrest a man. The tech was wrong.

Technology has given police vast reach to compare the faces of criminal suspects against a trove of mug shots, driver’s licenses, and even selfies plucked from social media.

@drewharwell My understanding of this specific case is that rules were not followed. While FR was the trigger for this event, the real failure was procedure. This could also have happened 40 years ago, or from now, with a completely different trigger. Wile FR is appropriately suspect, don't overlook less sophisticated but equally concerning problems in law enforcement that aren't related to it, and don't require it.
@wesdym @drewharwell yes. The article pointed out the detective took this at “face value” to seek a warrant, and then a stream of stupidity happened. We are putting too much faith prematurely in artificial intelligence. It’s ok for recommending movies and filling out emails, but not for this type of stuff. Human supervision is very important.
@drewharwell Who writes the code for these flawed systems?
@Sandywb @drewharwell Only a really big civil damage suit is going to get the city to tell the cops to stop this.
@billOfEarth42 @drewharwell Wouldn’t this man have a solid civil suit?
@Sandywb
A company that hopefully will be facing a lawsuit.

@drewharwell One small offshoot of AI, big problems ahead...

We always knew the application of tech and science in cringe fighting meant nothing if the system remained just as fallible and flawed.

@drewharwell crime fighting, I meant....

@drewharwell

what's particularly infuriating about this story is the straightup refusal to answer any questions or provide any info to AP or any other press, and the denial of a public records request citing "ongoing investigation"

there really should be some consequences for something somewhere for police depts

@drewharwell … I’m super curious how much $$ he’s going to win in Court! Sounds like a slam-dunk, but idk how to even guess the value.

Hopefully the judge adds a couple fat stacks, just to discourage other cops from being this bone-headed. ( not saying that’ll work, but we gotta try! )

@drewharwell
Business as usual in far too many places.
@drewharwell THIS HAS TO CHANGE In Quebec Canada…. A spithood and pepper-spray was used on a Black Man illegally detained causing his death…..He should have been released the day previous on bail….
@drewharwell very interested in reading story, it’s unfortunate behind paywall. Just learning about NOLA and it’s work, too bad we can’t get acquainted before paywall starts.

Thank you! Success! 🤲🏽
@drewharwell It’s not just faces. Twice I’ve been misidentified by red light cameras as another Jeep owner, because our license plates differ by an I and a 1.
@drewharwell you see the just need another $100 billion so they can just arrest every black person
@drewharwell
Welcome to the world of artifical stupidity 👍

I wish our country didn't need this, but given the state of our police forces, we need it to get home safely

@drewharwell police, who have the ability to take away Liberty, need to be held accountable. I don’t think any ‘founding father’ would have put up with this.
@drewharwell remember, America is a police state for African-Americans.
@drewharwell That scares me. I mean, it's not going to happen to me. But I just thought of all the black people I care about. Not an amusing scene at all.

Controversial Louisiana sheriff Harry Lee dies

Harry Lee, the seven-term suburban New Orleans sheriff whose blunt talk sometimes led to sour relations with black leaders, died Monday, several months after announcing he had leukemia, his chief deputy said. He was 75.

@drewharwell police departments need to understand the limitations of their tech before making life-altering decisions based on a mere probability. The sales teams that hawk this stuff only preach the capabilities and de-emphasize the limitations.
