Opinion | What a Failed Speaker Vote Means for Kevin McCarthy and Republicans

A small group of Republicans has promised to vote against Kevin McCarthy this week. They could throw the House into chaos not seen for a century.

@dynarski

We need to take cameras out of Congress. We need to end the era of pundit politics.

Limbaugh started an industry that monetized political division and outrage. He may soon be known as the destroyer of our world.

We've reached the end of the line. Tr*mp eliminated all adherence to norms. The rule of law and a civil society are just norms. Without them the US could be come a failed state, a Syria where the factions have nuclear weapons.

@dynarski - As someone in my 60s who worked in Congress in my 20s, this debacle has revealed to me how the American press is all too young to remember a time when Speakers reached out to the other party for votes. I worked in Congress in the 1980s. The idea in this article that, “a speaker’s power is ultimately derived from the ability to produce the 218 minimum votes needed to do business” is only 30 years old. It hasn’t always been like this. Thanks, Newt.
