And since Jan 1st 2022, contraception has been free for women under 26, including the birth control pill, implants, and IUDs.

@raph thanks for sharing. I found this AP news article with a little more detail. https://apnews.com/article/health-france-macron-birth-control-government-267f6fe1086e87d69b4654337553fe7d
France to make condoms free for anyone under 25, Macron says

PARIS (AP) — France will make condoms free in pharmacies for anyone up to age 25 in the new year, President Emmanuel Macron announced Friday. The move comes as the government says sexually transmitted diseases are on the rise among young people, and as this year’s exceptional inflation is cutting especially deeply into the budgets of France’s poorest.

@raph

This is good news, and as it should be. But contraception has been free in the UK for several decades (no prescription charges).

@regordane @raph Not condoms though, right?
@renmiou @raph not from pharmacies, no, but sometimes from other sources.
@regordane And here in the US, a major political party is working their way up to banning contraception 😡
@raph
Dumb question: Why isn't it free for all age 26 and older? Why the age cut-off?

@raph

The fact that it's arbitrarily only for 26 year olds and younger makes the whole thing bullshit.

@raph birth control of all kinds is free to all in UK and has been for years.
@raph plan b is now free for all regardless of age!!
@raph Wow, that's cool. France reminds me of America in the 1980s. Before the bottom fell out of everything.
@raph This type of news needs to come to the #USA ASAP!
@raph
Free birth control is also environmental justice. France is blowing (no pun intended 😏) the world away with proactive, solution-oriented environmental programs, though I reckon it's a side-effect with the free birth control.
@raph meanwhile in Brazil, condoms have been free for all ages for ages now

For those asking why there is a cut-off to obtain this free, I am assuming b/c (for the most part) under-26 is when you are first experimenting w sex, least experienced, least knowledgeable, hormones, impetuousness, & recklessness are highest, AND you are least likely to have a supportive doctor & least able to afford it.

After 26, you will have finished school & hopefully working a well-paying job. Plus, by 26, many are thinking about starting a family & these are not needed as much.
