I was so excited about Sherlock Holmes I didn’t realize MC Escher’s works also entered the public domain today!!

Edit - apparently Google showed me an article that isn’t specific to the US so this isn’t true here 😭 Sorry for the wrong info!

@dramypsyd @WarnerCrocker I can't find that that's the case—did you spot an article about this? Under US law his work from 1928 to 1972 (his death year) still has 95 years' protection; in a few countries, but not the UK or EU or Canada starting this year, life plus 50 would expire. In most non-US countries, it's life + 70 (an absurd duration).
@glennf @dramypsyd Here’s the only article I’ve spotted on this. Scroll down towards the end. https://publicdomainreview.org/blog/2023/01/public-domain-day-2023
Happy Public Domain Day 2023!

Each January 1st is Public Domain Day, where a new crop of works have their copyrights expire and become free to enjoy, share, and reuse for any purpose.

The Public Domain Review
@WarnerCrocker @dramypsyd The article opens with a list of possibilities—definitely confusing it you don't check dates.
@glennf @WarnerCrocker oh shoot so those of us in America still have to wait!
