The strange thing is that as far as I can tell you don't need ID to apply for or use a postal vote.
Please let me know if I'm wrong because I left the UK a while ago but hopefully will get one more general election before my 15 years of eligibility expire.

@dumbledope @lamplark We have applied for postal votes and we weren't asked for ID. We haven't yet had the letters back confirming the postal votes. (It shouldn't make any difference that the election staff at the council quite possibly still know exactly who I am.)
