I will continue to hold doors open for people even if they don’t thank me. I will continue to stand in line patiently at the supermarket when the store refuses to pay for more staff and thank the cashier. I will still smile at a stranger even if they think I’m weird. Because everyday we do not know what people are going through. Maybe they are in a terrible relationship and are being treated cruelly.
Maybe they are so worried about paying bills. Maybe they have just lost their mother, father, sibling, dog. To someone that smile won’t seem weird, it might be just what they need right there in that moment. One day you might need that smile from others.

@SpockResists Everyone is the protagonist of their own story, hidden from your view. A moment of patience, instead of impatience; a moment of compassion instead of irritation; a simple gesture.

Can save a life.

You might never know the impact your smile has had, or how holding that door was an unexpected joy for someone who is unfamiliar with being shown respect.

Genuine surprise at any consideration hurts my soul. It's too often along racial lines; often enough I couldn't help but notice.
