TLDR: Mastodon is very white, male, status quo, global north, and designed in a way to limit its potential for use in social movements.

Mastodon feels very different from Twitter, deliberately. It is truly like Live Journal. It is about people who are happy with their social circle and who think of virality and discoverability as a problem. They just want to communicate with the people they know, and limit other things. Ironically, it is more like a private gathering than a public space.

@naunihal my experience is the opposite. I joined mastodon very recently, and just by following a few hashtags I found interesting I discovered so many wonderful people from all over the world.

@naunihal I had a similar experience, Juli. Most of the conversations I am having are with people I didn't know prior to joining the fediverse. Though I mostly search for personal and hobby related subjects I find lots of interesting political and scientific topics in my own timeline, as well as the local and the federated one. 1/2

Mastodon/Fediverse is not as international as other social media channels (yet) and I think that is why there are so few Black people and POC in general here. I hope that will change. But it won't if Black people have a look, notice that there are more white folks and leave again. They have to stick around and bring others! 2/2
