I was at the Toronto airport yesterday morning and a woman asked me for directions to the train. I told her where to go and then realized that it wasn't even open yet. Service on this line is a travesty QT @notjustbikes https://macaw.social/@notjustbikes@notjustbikes.com/109588622184156733

Attached: 1 image It's ridiculous that the Toronto airport express train (UP Express) is still only running every 30 minutes. Toronto really is the expert in building expensive transit ... and then operating it in the stupidest and most inefficient way possible.

At the vancouver airport, the skytrain runs every 12 minutes starting at 5am and is running every 6 minutes by 6am (though it really should be 24hr). Toronto has more than double the population but can't manage to run a train more than twice an hour.
@sam the SkyTrain is an important part of the transit system, integrated into it such that it's useful even to folks not going to the airport. The UP Express seemed to just be grafted on and basically only services the airport, which seems like a waste. It was probably cheaper to build it that way, which would be typical shortsightedness when it comes to public transit spending...
@bidetofevil yeah, it is, though there are some pros to that approach. As an "express" train with limited stops, it gets you to union station (where you can transfer) quickly - it runs at double the speed of skytrain (though pearson is twice as far from downtown). It just needs more trains. Seems like they're only running 2! If they had had maybe 6 trains on the rails, it would be a great system. Waste of a huge investment right now.
@sam what makes it fast also limits its utility, and that's probably one of the reasons it runs so few cars. I wonder if they ran non-express versions with more stops, they can squeeze more usage out of it?
