Philadelphia's Abandoned Holmesburg Prison : A Dream of Release

Holmesburg Prison, Eastern State Penitentiary's more decayed and less accessible sister, was everything I hoped an abandoned prison would be. By Matthew Christopher of Abandoned America.

Holmesburg Prison has a bleak history but one of its lowest points is its facilitation of horrific medical tests carried out primarily on Black inmates. It's really worth learning about, so I talked to the author of Skin Theory, a recent book about the subject, on my newest podcast. Check it out here: https://anchor.fm/abandonedamerica/episodes/The-Skin-Experiments-at-Holmesburg-Prison-e1sao5q
The Skin Experiments at Holmesburg Prison by Abandoned America

In this episode we talk with Dr.  Cristina Visperas about her new book "Skin Theory: Visual Culture and  the Postwar Prison Laboratory", which explores the shocking past of the  now-abandoned Holmesburg Prison in Philadelphia. For decades Dr. Albert  Kligman conducted unethical and harrowing medical experiments on  Holmesburg's inmates - in this episode we explore what those experiments  were, how they formed the basis of the modern dermatology industry, and  what happened in their aftermath.

@AbandonedAmerica Dr. Mengele level shit.
@jobsboils yep. That's why they gave Kligman the Dr. Mengele award

@AbandonedAmerica

Really excellent and interesting podcast, very thought provoking

@AD thank you so much! That makes me so happy to hear
@AbandonedAmerica that they probably never got great pic
@HarpSong well, it closed, hopefully they went on somewhere better 😕
@AbandonedAmerica absolutely heartbreaking image. That we do this to people is inhumane.
@AbandonedAmerica @kwheaton I’ve been here! Wild hearing how prisoners were treated. The first was my fave photo from the day
@laurenandcats @kwheaton that's Eastern State Penitentiary. Holmesburg looks a lot like it but is not open to the public
@AbandonedAmerica @kwheaton ah! Dang it you’re right.
@laurenandcats @kwheaton they're super easy to confuse, though. That room in your photo looks nearly identical, just minus the bed frame
@AbandonedAmerica @kwheaton one thing I was glad to see was that they had religious spaces for not just Christians. I don’t recall if there were Muslim or Hindu spaces, but there was a Jewish space
@AbandonedAmerica that is one bleak and depressing place, one that deserves to be abondoned?
