A so-called "#AtmosphericRiver" is forming over the North Atlantic and will affect #Europe in the coming days. It is a conveyor belt of warm and humid air from the equatorial Atlantic region, several 1000 km long.

On the North American west coast, such rivers cause heavy #rain. Interestingly, such an event takes place there almost simultaneously with the one in Europe.

In Europe, these rivers rarely lead to extreme events due to the lack of north-south oriented mountain ranges. But ... 1/2

... in the current case, the #AtmosphericRiver provides extreme warmth in parts of #Europe at the turn of the year with the advection of subtropical or even tropical air up to mid-latitudes. In terms of temperatures at the 850 hPa level, we are in the upper range of what is possible at this time of year. Since the air is well mixed due to strong winds, it could even be enough for decade records at ground level.

@al_meteo It's already one of the wettest winters I've ever seen in Wales. This will be bad news for some.
@JanPV are there already impacts?
