(2) In warp drive systems, the engines DO NOT push the ship through space at the speed of light. The engines FOLD SPACE, and the ship then moves through a HOLE *IN* that fold. Without the engines, the fold goes away, and superluminal travel is no longer possible (at least in the most common systems; Borg transwarp conduits are another story).
