The Sociopathy of Greg Abbott (redux)

I thought it important to pause from my holiday break to share with you this post, originally published on March 5, 2021, after Texas Gov. Greg Abbott bused asylum seekers on Christmas Eve in sub-freezing temperatures to Washington, DC. His political stunt, which included children and many who were not properly dressed for the conditions, was not a surprise, but it was particularly vile for a man who portrays himself as a Christian.

America, America
@StevenBeschloss Trump showed many sociopaths how vulnerable our system is, now that the safeguards against the ultra rich have been systematically dismantled.
Now smarter sociopaths are lining up planning on successfully doing what Trump failed at.
The problem is money…people keep looking at the skin sore and ignoring the syphilis infection, treating it with topical creams ain’t going to solve the problem
@StevenBeschloss To the MAGA voter base sociopathy is a requirement for aspiring leaders. Look for Abbott and DeSantis (and whatever other GOP monstrosity surfaces) to try to outdo each other with cruel, racist stunts over the next two years.
@StevenBeschloss Immigration reform is politically toxic for Republicans who don’t want immigration at all and Democrats who do. Legislation will never pass with a 50/50 congress. Executive Action funding immigration is the only way. It will force Congress to act.

@marktaylor @StevenBeschloss

Voters are one thing, but Republican corporate donors, the Corporations that actually run America, want all of those immigrants. Immigrants provide an unlimited source of cheap exploitable labour.

All the talk, walls, stacked cargo containers and bussing of people are distractions and red meat for the base.

The ultimate in Republican hypocrisy, which is the point nowadays. Whatever lie works right now that's the one they'll use.

@StevenBeschloss
I am so sickened by the fact that Texas re-elected this monster.

When they could have chosen BETO.

It's just . . . beyond.

@StevenBeschloss

We can also acknowledge that this issue is successful for Republicans.
Yes, it's cruel, likely illegal, certainly deplorable...but we should not ignore the fact that Republicans get votes because of a perceived weakness by the Democrats and we need a reasonable plan of action.

Right-wing hypocrisy is never hypocrisy. It's a coherent belief system

Pointing out Republican hypocrisy is always tempting. It’s so easy to come up with examples—but the sheer ease of finding those examples shows why we need a different way of understanding what ...

@karlmorant @StevenBeschloss
The Republican creed is SELFISHNESS. That single word summarizes Republican and for that matter Tory and right wing worldviews anywhere.
"I'll do or say whatever it takes to gain the advantage. When I do get it, I'll attack anyone I see as a threat to my privilege. If it helps me, it's moral." But selfishness won't solve planetary problems. Conservatism shows the limitations of human nature.
@StevenBeschloss Steven, thank you for your very candid article. I would just like to add that the lack of humanity that Trump helped to showcase during his time in office is not a new phenomenon. History has been calling on us to act to save our society for centuries. The often ill-fated wars that have been waged against others have always tilted toward inhumane treatment of those who we think are inferior. Why have we allowed this treacherous behavior to be so accepted?
@StevenBeschloss Greed, Power, and Ignorance have gripped our society so tight that we are afraid to confront the true cause of the pain we experience. When will we stop looking for someone to blame? This cancer is caused by all of us who refuse to look in the mirror and do the right thing. The rich and wealthy underpinnings of those who believe that they are superior to the masses is a great place to start looking for what ails this society. The oppression of others is evil.
@StevenBeschloss I think the key point in there was that, whatever you want to say about the defeated former president, the GOP is now the home of so many unprincipled opportunists willing to first empower him, & then to emulate his callousness to court his radicalized base for power. The only path back out of this crisis is for the rest of us to defeat them at the polls again and again, to drive them from power. You can’t compromise with corruption without corrupting yourself.
@StevenBeschloss Why isn’t he in jail for abuse - of children and adults, Abbott is sick
@StevenBeschloss It would seem to me that along with anything else this is wreckless endangerment which is a crime in most jurisdictions. Arrest the driver and impound the bus pending trial. Abbott will run out of buses.
