Well, partner tried to use the nearly 20 year old vacuum cleaner today, and agreed that it is kaput.

Our house is very small and poky, and unsuitable for a robot vac. We have an old stick vac, which has already had one battery replacement.

So we’re shopping for a new vacuum cleaner. Barrel, and probably bagless.

Has to be good at picking up dog hair and my hair from old, grooved, wooden floorboards and be easy to maintain, because the number of hours I have spent cleaning the old rotating brush head on the other vacuum cleaner could have been far more productively spent!

@Wonderdog my brother swears by their Dyson. I have a ancient Miele barrel (must be almost 20 years old) which I feel is a good thing for that brand. It sits on its end to store. The bagless vax pet stick can do the rotating head (wrapped in my hair :/). The sticks are great quick clean ups (scattered cat litter), but might not have the battery / grunt for regular use. Replacement bits are still available for the Miele and I'm hoarding vax washable and replaceable filters.

@jojoeffe Miele come out top on Choice for best brand, their only drawback is that their best rated vacs are the bagged rather than bagless.

Apparently the new Dylan’s don’t have the build quality of the old ones, which is a shame.

Our old one had, however been held together with duct tape at several crucial joints for a few years. It was past its time.

@Wonderdog you've reminded me I was going to get a floor tool for the Miele as it's ancient and hairy. The carpet one is fine because this is the first place I've had carpet in years :)
