I personally don’t like posting twitter links here but this excellent thread by Lean Porquia summarizes why we oppose the SIM Registration Law:

Under the guise of fighting scammers and online harassment, the law requires all Filipinos to register our phone numbers with our government. Most of us fear this will only be used for surveillance.

β€œWhy we oppose the mandatory Sim Card Registration? 1. It will not deter fraud, scam, and illegal transactions. The law nor the IRR does not have enough safety nets against fraudulent transactions. Only tighter punishments to telcos. 2. It will be used for surveillance.”

@DocCarms solid concern. Also, speaking from a fellow SEA country that has implemented such law, it doesn't really stop scammers and doesn't mean the data is safe either: 1.3 billions of Indonesian SIM data were hacked earlier this year πŸ™ƒ

@irmagery @DocCarms In India, we don't get SIM cards unless our address and ID are verified. Our phone numbers, address and biometric are registered with the government under a unique identification scheme. Trust me. Forget stopping scammers. This is not even a small discomfort for them.
