The deradicalization of my parents' YouTube is working. @Jairus only had to get rid of a couple recos here and there, a gentle prune. It's taken a few visits to get here, but now we're seeing real progress.
The process: go through recommended videos until you sees something sketch. Go into that video's extended options, select "I'm not interested" or "I don't like this video" (different on mobile vs tv). You can also select "don't recommend this channel" to get rid of whole channels at once.

@NatalieZed @Jairus Mozilla released a study a few months ago: https://foundation.mozilla.org/en/research/library/user-controls/report/

(Linking to the full report because their summary page is a bit much)

Big thing is "Don't Recommend Channel" wins at effectiveness at 43% followed by pruning the watch history at 29%. So, if you're pressed for time go for those.

Good Luck pruning horribleness!

Does This Button Work? Investigating YouTube's ineffective user controls

Powered by 22,722 volunteers, Mozilla scrutinized YouTube to determine how much control people actually have over the platform’s recommendation algorithm. This is what we learned.
