As a human rights lawyer who has done extensive immigration work, let me make something absolutely clear.

Asylum is legal immigration.
There's no "port of entry" requirement.
There's no "visa" requirement.
There's no "first country" requirement.
You enter the United States, and you apply for asylum.

Because asylum is legal immigration. Period.

Period.

@QasimRashid back in the 1970’s (and later( when people were fleeing the Soviet Union to come to the USA, these folks entered similarly, except by air, at airports, or by boat. No VISAs. Seeking asylum. It was no different. (I remember, as a kid, my family helped to sponsor a couple from Bulgaria, who fled to the US…, I remember hearing the story of their escape and didn’t understand why they had to do it that way).
