If you're ever near Mt. Shasta/Weed, CA, be sure to check out the Black Butte Center for Rail Culture. It's really cool, especially for those of us who used to ride freight trains.

I was last there in 2017. One of the not-to-miss sights is the 1926 water tower across the tracks. Dating from the steam train era, there are old hobo tags from the 1930s carved into the wooden base. It's nice to sit there and imagine...

@Mikal the hobo gathering and parade around town were great. Such a fun town to ride to.

@Smitty Oh, I didn't realize they did that there! I'm going to stop in next road trip. In 2017 I helped shovel gravel for Utah's car spot, though it wasn't on site yet.

I used to ride back in the late '80s/'90s. '97 I think was my last ride, out to Havre on the highline. I miss it, really.

@Mikal I think I was riding from around 2004-2012 or so. I Got chased by the Bull in Havre once. Ended up running through the fast food spot (McDonald’s?) near the yard to get away. It was fun at the time but not something I’d want to do in my 40s.
@Smitty Ha ha, right?
Since Havre is a long stop, I always knew I had time to hop off and run into the grocery store right there and stock up on supplies.
