Why people say “mastodon is hard”

I’ve been asking people about their experiences with mastodon or if they started to sign up and gave up why.

The top issue is picking a server. They can sense it matters, the servers that sound appealing are often closed. This one is tough.

The next issue is how critical services like debirdify are — and these are hard or impossible to do on mobile. So they get in… but it’s dead. Have any variants integrated this?

Then there are the “minor issues”

@futurebird IMO movetodon.org essentially solved the account movement issue. It's true that you still need to authorize with Twitter and know your password, and same with your Mastodon account, but then there's just a big "Follow all" button, and individual buttons for all of the accounts you follow. No downloads, no CSV, works on mobile.

Picking the server is my least favorite part... especially because a lot of folks still parrot the "it doesn't really matter" line, which just isn't true.
