It's Christmas Day. Who wants to read bad news ? Not me. But unfortunately even today the national broadcaster of the Netherlands, NOS, is spreading absurd fake news about covid.

Just yesterday I read how the concentration of covid in our sewers had reached the second highest level of the entire pandemic and today the NOS is still enthusiastically telling everyone that it's perfectly OK to pack themselves into churches, restaurants etc.:

Be careful out there. The pandemic is not over. People are still getting ill, getting long-covid and dying in huge numbers. #gaslighting from governments and news outlets is not helping us to beat #covid, and of course it's not only covid that we need to avoid because we also have lots of influenza, RSV and other opportunistic infections spreading easily due to the compromised immune systems of people who have had covid.

@hembrow The NOS is also again spreading the idea today that the Chinese are suffering because they've had fewer vaccinations than us. That's not true either.

Attached: 1 image I just saw a piece on the Dutch TV programme #EenVandaag in which they discussed the high rate of covid infection, even in their own staff, while they take no precautions whatsoever to limit spread. A minimising Dutch expert was interviewed and she assured the public that the huge rise in cases in China was due to the much lower level of vaccination in that country relative to the Netherlands so the same thing could never happen here. @hembrow The issue is the Chinese vaccination rate reduces with age, so the higher a person's risk the less likely they are to be vaccinated.

@IanStockport I'm not arguing with that as it's true so far as I can tell, but there's no such nuance in the reporting here. We're being fed a tale of "lower rate of vaccination there => we're perfectly safe here", when neither of those is actually true.
People are being encouraged to live a "normal" life when the threat of disease is still very much present.

@hembrow You are absolutely right, it's fake news. But don't blame the national broadcast. They are only reporting on what happens in the community, superficially. Sure, they are doing a very bad job doing their own research. But the real villains are in the government, the medical boards of the official national health services and research institute RIVM. They KNOW how catastrophical the situation is and they fail miserably informing and advising us.

@hembrow I had no idea that one (or more?) covid infections can weaken your immune system? I was under the impression that it would be good if we built up herd immunity so that the virus dies out? Where can I find more info on that statement?

@wendelawaller Unfortunately we've been repeatedly lied to about immunity, but you might have noticed that despite all the immunity that or community is supposed to have by now that people are still getting sick.
