@intransitivelie @GertrudeZane I put yellow shrink tubing on the end of the rope to keep the ends from fraying. Then, through the shrink tube, I drove a screw into the pipe. This anchored the end of the rope. Then, I sparingly applied carpenter's glue to the pipe, and tightly wrapped the rope around, anchoring the other end with a screw again. I can't remember how much rope I used, but it was a lot. It took two packages of rope to line the entire thing. The attached photo shows the end anchor...
