Fediverse humans! Highly recommend following @PleaseCaption if you need help being reminded to include #AltText. If you follow it'll follow you back, and if you accidentally post an image with no caption it'll send you a little reminder. It goes a long way in making the space here friendly and accessible to all. ♡

@siona may I also add the suggestion to separate words in a hashtag with capital letters, using either camelCasing or PascalCasing?
This will help some screenreaders to detect word boundaries and thus improve pronunciation.
(It can also help prevent unintentional misreading; e.g. compare #AccessibilityIsNowHere to #AccessibilityIsNowhere)
@FiXato Yes! Edited to fix. Thank you. 🙏
@FiXato
Wow that a great illustration of the importance of delineating word boundaries in hashtags. Going to use this one from now on.

@bezorp I know some more examples, but most aren't as suitable for all ages. xD

I'll add them in an untagged reply (https://toot.cat/@FiXato/109570427192584841) to this post in case you (or others) are interested. :)

Edit: added the link with further examples.

Content warning: other examples of potential names or hashtags where not indicating word boundaries with capitals could result in inappropriate words.

  • PenIsland is probably one of the more well-known examples of a domain name that could be misread without PascalCasing. (e.g. penisLand)
  • ExpertsExchange or ExpertSexChange?
  • apetit or ApeTit?
  • LesBocages or LesboCages?
  • BlackHatEBook or BlackHateBook?
  • HollandsHitFestival or HollandShitFestival? I think both can apply. xD
  • WhoRepresents or WhorePresents?
  • LaDrape could also result in a rather inappropriate name.
  • TherapistFinder could result in an inappropriate name of a similar kind.
  • Much more innocuous, and no longer an actual website example would be ChildrensWear vs ChildrenSwear.
  • GodIsNowhere vs GodIsNowHere
  • LetItSnow could be read as Le Tit Show, though I'd say it's less likely to be read as such because of the mixed language.

There are some more examples in the thread over at https://toot.cat/@FiXato/109305103818456257

What family-friendly examples of words can you think of that could be misinterpreted when combined as #hashtags when not capitalising every word in it? Because the classic website name examples I can think of (PenIsland, WhoRepresents, HollandsHitFestival) perhaps aren't the best examples. So far the only example I could think of is ChildrensWear vs ChildrenSwear. #language #AskFedi
