There's been some back-and-forth among the #podcastingcommunity I hang out with about the costs of production: whether it's appropriate to recommend more expensive mics for better audio quality when most podcasters don't make money at it.

IMO even hobbyist or activist podcasters should care about production quality: it should sound as good as possible within AFFORDABLE means. Note that word in caps: no one should spend money they don't have for #podcast creation. (1/2)

But if you want listeners to enjoy your stuff, do the work to improve the audio. Stuck with a laptop mic? You can still put up blankets or otherwise reduce echoes. My friend @HollyGoDarkly has recommended an inexpensive microphone alternative to the venerable Blue Yeti that sounds SO much better, the AudioTechnica ATR-2100X (it minimizes room noise nicely).

If you only care about the creative act of #podcasting but not audience growth, however, you do you. (2/2)

@ThatChipGuy I agree. I have trouble focusing on poor quality audio.
