Journalists will never stick around this app long term sadly unless it adds quote posting. We desperately need it to communicate effectively, build on each others ideas, and add crucial context to posts. These are things replies simply do not accomplish. Also quote posting or reblogging does not = harassment! Tumblr, for instance, has had the feature since the beginning. We need it here now too 🙏🏻
@taylorlorenz but Tumblr *had* a toxicity problem in the early 2010s. I had a very innocuous gif from a tvshow (Archer, I think?) reblogged by someone who added something like "only in the patriarchy someone would find this funny", and their Tumblr was just pages and pages of shit-stirring. Only when the site when to shit and most people left bc, as as someone on the birdsite put it, there was no longer any clout to be gained, that went away.
@taylorlorenz that said, I agree that QRT is a valuable tool, but it needs something else to not devolve into "look at this mf" behaviour. If I see people on birdsite saying they're not joining Mastodon because they can't get their dunks here, then surely they got one part of the equation right. Maybe allowing people to create community lists of "trusted" individuals (while at the same time also allowing people to have a blacklist w/o having to block) and who select who else can QRT, idk.
