One positive thing about Elon Musk's tyrannical attack on the freedom of the press is that it pushed me over to Mastodon. I'm glad to be here.

But we can't ignore the dangerous precedent that's being set. The moment everyone starts going along with the dictator's rules and normalizing his behavior, he wins.

It's not surprising that some journalists are getting banned from Twitter. The question is why more aren't challenging and defying him.

Journalists who won’t delete Musk tweets remain locked out of Twitter

Musk suspended reporters from Twitter and later reinstated them, with a catch: They must delete tweets related to the account @ElonJet, which has tracked Musk’s plane using public data.

@gilduran

getting everybody to move from there to here is a worthy free speech fight.

@gilduran Because of the investment they made in the channel. Afraid of change. It is the risk of putting all your eggs in one private basket that now with change of management proves to be fully unreliable. This is why social media belong in the (regulated) public domain and not in the hands of private enterprise.
@gilduran I am glad you're here, too. Invite your friends. We'll throw a party with snacks.
@gilduran isn't it hard to fight it when the lunatic himself controls it?
@gilduran I already feel this screenshot will get me so far
@gilduran Think back to all the small insults, manipulations, and exploitations you endured over the years before #Elon took over and accelerated the train wreck. All the buy-in, sunk cost, "investment", lock-in, you and fellow journalists put into #Twitter... that's what we have to avoid. Anyone can see a train wreck happening. But we rarely notice the train cabin slowly filling with smoke and fumes from a smoldering fire. I certainly never saw this coming.
@hobs I wonder how long this place will remain nice. Already had to block my first homophobe!
@gilduran Sorry. That stinks.
If the #MechanismDesign (#algorithms and #UI #affordances) continues to support normal #prosocial human instincts, it might be stable for many many years. It's worked for Wikipedia, StackExchange. #Fedies survived several growth spurts over the past 5 yr. Even survived a hostile takeover attempt by Truth.Social. Even if some developers and #admins lose #noncommercial, #human-centric focus, other supercooperators step in and fedi-up
@gilduran Thank you for standing up to Musk’s authoritarianism. I wish all journalists would.
