Pluralistic: What the fediverse (does/n’t) solve (23 Dec 2022) – Pluralistic: Daily links from Cory Doctorow

#NewYorkers! The state legislature has passed landmark #RightToRepair legislation, but Governor Hochul hasn't signed it and it might die. This would be a travesty. If you're in New York, visit https://eff.org/rtr to help tell the Governor that we can't afford to wait (and tell your friends in New York, too!).

We must demand that the owners and leaders of tech platforms be fair and good - but we must also be prepared for them to fail at this, sometimes catastrophically. Over the last four decades though, greedy robber barons have worked out how to lock in customers and suppliers, eliminate competitors, and shake down everyone for more than their fair share. This…

“Metaverse” means “pivot to video” - Cory Doctorow - Medium

@pluralistic
Why do you (and most of my favorite authors) write more and faster than I can read? I manage to read two books a week, but that's not enough to read all the titles in my tsundoku. 😅

Also: congratulations!

@fifischwarz Thank you! Seven more books in production at the moment!
@pluralistic why are you treating this like twitter? Make one post.
@dillera As noted in my bio, I post long threads from this account and there are many ways to get my essays if you don't like my Mastodon style - RSS, newsletter, Medium, Tumblr, a blog, etc. I recommend unfollowing me here and subscribing to one of those if you prefer. Links at pluralistic.net.
@dillera (as to treating like Twitter, I can hardly think of anything more Twitterlike than signing up for a feed that has been posting long threads for several YEARS and lecturing the author of that thread about the one true way to use Mastodon, from your 12-day-old Mastodon account)

@dillera some instances allow posts longer than the default character limit, but most stick with the default 500 bytes, which doesn't permit enough space to fit a thread like the one you're replying to into one post.

Cory tags every pos in all his long therads with CWs, which are easy to filter for as desired:

@shi thanks for the back context. just didn't expect toot storms over here- but hey, i fixed it and won't see them any more! Just strange to use this medium like that IMHO.
@pluralistic I’m sure others have already pointed this out, but since the mistake is still in the post: The Girl Who… is not her debut novel. Please fix that.
