I woke up to 11℉ and decided to stay under the covers and read for a while.

I started off reading about how to make a shave horse (http://www.veritastools.com/Content/Assets/ProductInfo/EN/05L1901AI.pdf) I am always intrigued by the idea of handmade workholding, and using a leg or two to hold things still seems pretty awesome. But shave horses are for green #woodworking and I don't expect to spend much time on that kind of work any time soon.

I was reading the LAP blog (https://blog.lostartpress.com/2022/12/16/roman-workbenches-for-chairmaking/) and in that blog post Chris linked to https://blog.lostartpress.com/2017/05/16/more-translated-text-from-hulot-on-the-roman-workbench/ . The second link is, IMO, a hard read, so I figured I'd summarize it in brief for others interested in this kind of #woodworking. I'll do a paragraph for each picture.
Roman Workbenches for Chairmaking (& Other Things)

“Ingenious Mechanicks” is my worst-selling book. Since it was released in 2016, we’ve sold about 4,000 copies. But I don’t care. That book changed my workshop life more than any other project I’ve …

This is how you use the bench and associated tools. I recently made legs for a stool and held the legs while I shaved them either with my hands or with pipe clamps. This would have been approximately 1000x better. #woodworking
This is the piece you hold against your chest when using your body to hold the work. The slots are so you can hold things vertically or horizontally. The bottom bit is to go into an apron, which I don't have but I figure I could improvise something if I wanted, or just have it on a kind of necklace style strap. #woodworking

Here's the final low bench. The left hand side has what Chris (and maybe others?) call a Hulot block. Note that it has a notch at the bottom for holding things vertically, a bunch of levels for holding things horizontally, and a hole to hold legs you might be shaving. I could have made this pretty easily and it would have been so nice.

The right side of the bench allows you to do workholding with wedges, as far as I can tell. #woodworking
