Just some of the many things experts told us:

• Give adults with the lowest #literacy skills more attention

• Increase availability & flexibility of classes, especially in rural areas

• Train #educators how to work with adults with #disabilities

• Invest more $$ in #AdultEducation

• Increase #teacher pay & add more full-time teachers

America’s Adult Education System Is Broken. Here’s How Experts Say We Can Fix It.

Experts say that more money is critical to improving the national system. Many states have developed creative solutions in spite of their limited funding.

@ProPublica @AnnieWaldman @annaleighclark All excellent ideas, and much needed. However, as one who lives in one of the most illiterate rural counties in the nation, the problem isn't a lack of ideas, but a populace that refuses to raise taxes on itself. The majority here is right-wing and anti-tax. Until we get a lot (repeat, a LOT) of progressives moving in and education being funded properly for a change, this is going to remain one dumb, hick county. (California, believe it or not.) ...

@ProPublica @AnnieWaldman @annaleighclark ... If I knew of any way to talk sense to my neighbors, I would. But they'd rather drive around with Trump flags on their pickups than read a book.

I know -- my spouse and I were stupid enough to open a bookstore here. We lost our shirts -- and everything else.

If you have any ideas as to what two lone book lovers could do, I'm all ears. But as one who lives in the middle of the problem, I don't see a way out.

We try to do these things with our adult education programs.
