I went out to look at the freezing rain and discovered this guy napping in the nandina. (Technically he's in torpor.) When he wakes up tomorrow he's only about three feet from a heated feeder.

@teresa_athome I was gifted a hummingbird feeder heater for solstice, and it was just in time! They were all over it today. What a sight to find one in torpor.
@teresa_athome what heater do you use? is it one that attaches to the bottom of an existing feeder? I’ve just been swapping two feeders every few hours to thaw inside, the hummer has been in a tree on my patio and scolds me every time I go out there (this was daytime through kitchen door & screendoor).
@anniegreens After the snow last spring I looked for heated feeders, but couldn’t find any that looked like they would fasten to my existing feeders. I found a feeder called “Heated Hummers Delight” (or something like that). I put them out in October and just change them like usual. They do a good job of keeping the sugar water just above freezing.
The hummingbirds have been perching by the lights most of the day, but moved to a tree when I stepped out to snap the picture.
