Gotta love tech journalists who describe Mastodon as "that impossible-to-use website." First of all, it's an app. C'mon. Second of all, aren't these the same people who write breathless explainers about the wonder of cryptocurrencies, which are not only impossible to understand but literally built from bullshit?
@annaleen itβs such a confusing sentiment bc itβs basically the same experience (without a few refinements) except you pick a server??
@Tayhatmaker Right? And as tech journalists, shouldn't we be, you know, curious about new tech and not scared of things that seem hard to understand?
@annaleen new technology without an obvious potential for corporate abuse, idk folks try it out could be fun! personally thrilled for potentially viable products not made by big tech ππ»
@Tayhatmaker @annaleen Just please keep at least a *little* suspicion, because you know they'll try shit. Japan's major instances, all owned by ... somebody, can that Happen Here?

@mjfgates @Tayhatmaker @annaleen Instances here have owners, which is why it's better that we have many medium sized, local or specialized instances instead of a few large ones. Also those of us who can need to kick in a little money to fund our instances so the owner won't be tempted to sell to get out of a financial hole.

If wonder how this might change when #tumblr joins the #fediverse, bringing along their 300 million active users. That's nearly 100x the current mastodon user base!!
