I'm not sure who I'm trying to impress with my naked portafilter. I'm pretty sure it does not produce better espresso, but it definitely produces a bigger mess.

@jameswynn channeling? I used to get crazy messes until I ground finer and distributed the coffee more before tamping

Yeah, I guess that's why I continue to use it. You can pretty well tell when you've got a bad puck. And that's when it makes such a huge mess 😂

@jameswynn If it is creating a mess then there is probably something you need to tweak with the shot. It should come out uniformly, so if its not then you have a reason to keep using the bottomless as your gauge for improving extraction. I use the bottomless all the time unless I am making singles for guests, because it is easier to use than a single spout portafilter.

Yeah, any time it makes a mess then the shot always tastes off. Maybe I need one of those stirring contraptions with all the needles.
