The IBM 704 was the first mass-produced computer with floating-point arithmetic hardware. The 704 used vacuum tube logic circuitry and core memory.

(COBOL was the first practical language deliberately made that way, but by the time it shipped, there were already FORTRAN compilers for multiple machines -- the people who threw the language together had done it by accident!)
