@[email protected] thanks all who have made suggestions. I got him a framework laptop and it's great. You have to install the ram, ssd, and accessory cards yourself, then install the OS (we did Ubuntu). The WiFi didn't work until we ran updates after the initial installation (had to use an old USB Wi-Fi dongle to get online) but after running updates and rebooting all worked just fine.
